What is Osteopathy?

Osteopathy is a manual therapy based on the anatomy and physiology of how the body should function. If the structures of the body are not functioning properly this can lead to pain, stiffness and even illness. We aim to restore maximum whole body health by treating those underlying structures causing your complaint. By getting to the root of the problem we aim to give lasting effects.
The physiological effects of various types of trauma are something in which osteopathy can be of great value.
What is Cranial Osteopathy?

Cranial Osteopathy is a very gentle, yet powerful, system of osteopathic medicine working on the "involuntary motion" in the body. Involuntary motion is the normal motion of all body tissues to allow healthy function and allow the body to accommodate external stresses. Osteopaths assess this motion and treat any perceived blocks, for example those caused by trauma and illness. In babies, the birth process, growth spurts, and fevers can also cause problems. Osteopaths may focus on the head and low back, but can assess and treat from any part of the body.
Babies are very prone to various birth strain patterns and addressing these patterns cranially may help with some of their difficulties.
Toddlers, even babies, and children, often experience falls or even accidents and addressing the ensuing structural changes may be of real help. I would include the results of growth spurts, and high fevers here.
In the field of Orthodontics, assessing the cranial structures for normal function can help, as treating underlaying mechanical problems will help the normal development of the face and jaws and may reduce the time needed for braces, etc. or further interventions.Mrs. Manston has completed several postgraduate tempero-mandibular courses on this subject.
I like to check pregnant mums especially re- pelvic mechanics, the pelvic floor, and ligaments more directly related to birth, to help optimise the chances of a good labour.
