What is Osteopathy?

Osteopathy is a manual therapy of applied anatomy and physiology. Its aim being to restore maximum whole body health by treating the structural causes of your complaint (and not just the bony structure but the muscles, fascia, ligaments, circulatory and lymphatic systems, and nervous systems).
Some conditions that osteopaths can help, using a wide variety of gentle and safe techniques to restore balance and homeostasis - (we do also use stronger manipulative techniques if and when indicated):
What is Cranial Osteopathy?

Cranial Osteopathy (or as it is sometimes called "Craniosacral Osteopathy") is a very gentle, yet extremely powerful, system of osteopathic medicine which uses the patient's "Cranial Rhythm" (also known as the " Involuntary Mechanism") for evaluation and treatment.
Conditions treated by Osteopathy:

Neck, back and extremity pain and problems e.g. sciatica, whiplash, sprained ankles, neuralgia, migraines, coccalgia, sports injuries, headaches
Dental and jaw-related problems
Stress-related problems problems - exam nerves, executive stress and conditions such as fatigue, depression, insomnia which may/may not be stress-related, including ME & CFS, and fibromyalgia
Immune and Stress - manifested in repeated colds, ENT problems & Flu, and skin conditions
We treat viscerally - that is using very safe and gentle manipulations and stretches to the organs and deep tissues in the abdomen and/pelvis/chest cavity - some conditions treated may include bronchitis and other respiratory problems, indigestion and acid reflux, post-op adhesions, and scar tissue, irritable bowel, some urinary incontinence and mild prolapse, some prostatitis
Pregnancy and babies & children nausea, vomiting, piles, backache, threatened miscarriage, preparation for labour and birth., some postnatal depression and common infant problems - colic, feeding problems, 'won't settle', excessive crying, premature babies - immune function/chest function, ENT problems, insomnia, birth trauma, breech, fast, very slow birth, forceps, ventouse, effects of vaccinations and falls or high fevers
The initial consultation is 1 hour and includes a concise and detailed case-history, and a series of structural and clinical investigations which will take into account any recognised medical complaint and condition and enable us to decide which type of technique will be most suited to the patient.
Treatment is undertaken only if judged beneficial, and may include:
- joint articulation and manipulation
- gentle release and functional techniques
- cranial osteopathy
- lymphatic drainage
- visceral techniques
- advice on exercises
Osteopathy is not just a method of treating back pain and sports injuries it is in fact a system of manual medicine. We manipulate the body using a variety of techniques to help improve the overall, and real, physiological function of the internal and external structures and organs of the body, and it is in this way that we can aim to treat a variety of conditions.
Treatment may be supplemented with herbal medicines if and when indicated, and Mrs Manston tends to combine osteopathic and herbal approaches if, indicated, for some patients, although some patients may choose a purely herbal approach - in which case a separate fee-structure operates.
